It is unclear who will and who won’t be at Newcastle United next season.
We know for sure that Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett will not be, with both players set to leave the club this summer when their contracts expire. Eddie Howe did want to keep them, but that was no longer feasible once Newcastle United failed to qualify for Europe.
Elsewhere, it is unclear what the future holds for Bruno Guimaraes. His £100million release clause casts some doubt over where he will be, but Newcastle are confident he will remain at St James’ Park.
There is less confidence regarding Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson. Both players could be sold this summer, as the Magpies look to boost their PSR position.
For Wilson, a move away makes sense given his age and contract situation, with his current deal expiring in 2025.
Kieran Trippier’s Newcastle future is uncertain
And the same could be said for Kieran Trippier.
He also has a contract until the end of next season, whilst he is also the wrong side of 30.
The 33-year-old almost left Newcastle during the January transfer window to sign for Bayern Munich, but the Bundesliga club were unwilling to meet the Magpies’ financial demands. That resulted in a move collapsing, but Trippier’s Toon future has been far from certain ever since.
However, the defender’s latest comments hint towards his future being at St James’ Park.
Trippier hints at Newcastle United stay
Trippier is set to play at St James’ Park tonight, where he will captain England in a friendly against Bosnia And Herzegovina. Ahead of that game, he has spoke to iNews about next season, suggesting that he will continue to be a Newcastle United player.
“It’s definitely a blow, of course you wanted to finish in Europe. It’s one of those things,” he said.
“United won the FA Cup, and obviously that took us out of Europe. There’s no time to dwell on it though.
“We have to go again next season, and with one game a week, with the players we’ve got, that’s exciting.
“We can be on the grass more because with three games a week, you can’t really do that. It’s something the club can learn from.”
Newcastle should keep Trippier for what could be an ‘exciting’ season
It sounds like Trippier is planning to be part of what he thinks could be an exciting season for Newcastle United.
It is understandable why he thinks it could be a good one, given the fact the Magpies will only have to focus on their domestic duties. That served them very well during the 2022/23 season, and next year could be even better given the fact our squad is now even stronger.
One of the reasons it is stronger is Tino Livramento, who eventually wants to take Trippier’s place in the starting XI. That will happen in the coming years, but Howe should do his best to rotate them next year.
The £12million man still has a role to play, even if he did endure some tough moments during the 2023/24 campaign. He is a key part of Howe’s squad, and his experience will be vital as Newcastle look to bounce back after missing out on Europe.
Hopefully they bounce back with Trippier in the side, as it would be a real shame to see him leave this summer. However, these comments at least hint towards him staying.
