In a truly amazing feat, the recently crowned Bundesliga Champions Bayer Leverkusen are two wins away from a fully unbeaten season, and a historic ‘invincible treble’ for the German club.
Bayer Leverkusen are set to face off against Atlanta in the Europa League final on Wednesday night (22 May), with the historic match taking place at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. There will be plenty of German and Italian supporters enjoying the hospitality in Dublin Fair City this evening with a few on the lookout for some Europa League Final tickets.
Xavi Alonso’s side have two matches left before writing history. They firstly have to face the Italian side, Atlanta, in the Europa League final tomorrow and will take on the second-tier German side Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal Cup three days later.
After winning the Bundesliga with an incredible 17-point margin over second placed Stuttgart, Xavi Alonso’s side have stretched their invincible streak to 51 games in all competitions, domestically and crucially in European football.
If they are able to extend this streak to 53 games, they will have successfully brought home an incredible ‘invincible treble’ of trophies for the first time in any club’s history.
So, there is no doubt that Xavi Alonso will have his side fired up and to come out all guns blazing, with the intent to write a new chapter into football’s history books.
However, it wouldn’t be fair to completely write off Atlanta, who have successfully fought off some major opponents to seal their place in the Europa League final.
First of all, this will mark Atlanta’s first involvement in a European final, as they have continually failed to make their mark in European competitions until this season.
Furthermore, Atlanta have had a serious drought of trophies, having not won anything at all since 1963. This means that the Serie A side has failed to win a trophy in over 60 years.
Atlanta have already had the chance this season to end this drought, by making their way to the final of the Coppa Italia, which took place on Wednesday, 15 May. they were up against against Juventus, who sit just above them in the Serie A, and whose form hasn’t been fantastic this season.
So Atlanta had high hopes that they could win their first trophy in 61 years. However, an early goal from Vlahovic proved to be the decider of the match, and now Atlanta is set to face the undefeated Bayer Leverkusen off the back of that brutal cup final loss.
Both teams really do have it all to play for, with Bayer Leverkusen hoping to finish this season undefeated in all competitions and with an incredible tally of three trophies to show for it, and Atlanta, who are desperate to win a trophy and not have a repeat of their Coppa Italia final heartache.
But the Italians will be rank outsiders and it will be a major shock if Leverkusen, who remember have former Celt Jeremie Frimpong with their ranks, don’t collect the silverware in Dublin tomorrow night.
Oh my days as Jeremie would say.
