Manchester City star Erling Haaland was beaten by a whopping five players in Express Sports’ Player of the Season vote. The Norwegian star recorded another remarkable season in front of goal, though his overall performances left plenty to be desired.

Haaland scored a sensational 27 goals in 31 league appearances to help City record their fourth successive title, registering five assists along the way.

But after finding the back of the net on 36 occasions last season and being generally a more significant threat, many have opted against heaping praise on Haaland and instead suggested that he underperformed given what he is truly capable of.

In a recent poll conducted by Express, Phil Foden was voted player of the season with 4,489 voted after a remarkable campaign which saw him score 19 times and assist eight in 35 appearances – tying down a spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI on a weekly basis.

The playmaker stepped up in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne and led by example, proving an unstoppable force when deployed on either wing and also in his favoured No. 10 role.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer was then the second-highest player in the rankings with 2,319 votes after he broke out as one of the most impressive stars of the season – and one of just a handful of Blues stars to emerge with credit after a rollercoaster of a campaign.

Arsenal duo Martin Odegaard (963 votes) and Declan Rice (670 votes) then completed the top four after they led by example in Mikel Arteta’s side, though ultimately the pair were left empty-handed at the end of the season.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins also trumped Haaland in the leaderboard, earning double the amount of the Norwegian’s votes with a total of 670.

Haaland was therefore forced to settle for fifth place, despite winning back-to-back Golden Boots. The ex-Borussia Dortmund star’s displays saw only 334 people rank him as their player of the season, with those opting in favour of a City star voting for Foden.

Only seven players have ever won consecutive Golden Boots, meaning that Haaland joins Michael Owen, Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane in an exclusive group of forwards. If he lands the award next season, he will become the third star to land the hat-trick, along with Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer.
