Mason Greenwood attracted plenty of suitors with his Getafe form
Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is reportedly set to join Marseille – who were one of as many as seven interested parties in the summer transfer across Europe.
The one-time England international, who was loaned to Getafe last season, had a prolific spell in Spain that resulted in him scoring 10 goals and assisting six more. That form is reported to have caught the attention of several European clubs.
However, it is Marseille that seem to be the frontrunners in acquiring his services. The French side are said to have now agreed a deal in principle with United, getting the jump on Serie A’s Lazio, and it’s up to Greenwood to approve the move.
Other clubs including Juventus, Napoli and Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund have also been monitoring Greenwood’s developments, according to The Telegraph. Valencia and Benfica were said to be interested too, but none of them offered deals like Marseille or Lazio.
Greenwood is close to making his summer exit to France from Old Trafford, having been given permission to undergo a medical should he choose to go. The 22-year-old will be parting ways with the club he grew up supporting and playing for.
Greenwood, given his only international cap to date by Gareth Southgate in September 2020, departed Carrington on Monday immediately after the conclusion of a meeting between him, club chiefs and his representatives. Minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe remained coy on the situation surrounding him back in February.

Ratcliffe said: “We will make a decision, correct. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?
“He’s a footballer, so we are in charge of football. So the answer is ‘Yeah, we have to make decisions’. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.”
Once considered to be worth £134m, Greenwood’s star has undoubtedly dimmed following charges against him of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Marseille’s £35m offer, including a hefty sell-on percentage clause, reflects his plummeting stock. Despite also having a year left on his contract with United, it is now obvious that the forward is set to heed their plea to rebuild his career away from Old Trafford.
United conducted an internal investigation with regards to the prospect of reintegrating Greenwood back into their squad last year, coming to the conclusion that it was best for all parties that he didn’t play for them again.
