Munich streets have been packed to the rafters on the day Euro 2024 gets underway. Scotland are the host nation’s first opponents and the Tartan Army have made the trip in huge numbers, packing the city to the brim and drinking pubs dry.

From today onwards it’s all about the football as, following Germany’s clash with Scotland at the Allianz Arena, it’s three group games per day for the next week. Anticipation is sky-high, and everybody is keen to offer their take on what’s to come.

Here, Express Sport brings you a selection of stories you might have missed on Euro 2024’s opening day…

Scottish antics

An estimated 100,000 blue-shirted fans have travelled to Germany for Scotland’s first major overseas tournament in almost 30 years. And they’re certainly making the most of the getaway, as hoards of supporters without a ticket have gathered in Munich to cheer Steve Clarke’s side on.

Aside from one fan’s penis being exposed from under a kilt during a live TV interview, another admitting he secretly flew to Germany while his wife was out shopping, and the masses causing some pubs to run completely out of beer, the Scots have been on their best behaviour.

Supporters made their way to Marienplatz, one of Munich’s main plazas, in such huge numbers before the game on Friday that local authorities temporarily had to close the nearby subway station and order people to congregate in other areas of the city.

Bold Cristiano Ronaldo claim

Could Cristiano Ronaldo have one last big individual accolade left in him at 39 years old? Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger seems to think so.

During a social media Q&A, the former Manchester United midfielder has backed Portugal veteran Ronaldo to outscore Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane at Euro 2024 on his way to winning the Golden Boot.

With 130 goals at international level – more than any other male player in history – Al-Nassr star Ronaldo certainly has the pedigree to upset the tournament’s other big hitters. And putting himself top of the pile would be some way to crown what looks set to be his last Euros.

Roger Federer chimes in

Tennis great Roger Federer is ready to sink his teeth into Euro 2024, Wimbledon and the Olympic Games this summer. The Swiss encapsulated how virtually every sports fan is feeling ahead of Germany’s match with Scotland by outlining his plan for the coming weeks.

“I’ll be watching the Euros, Wimbledon and the Olympics,” he said during a graduation ceremony at Dartmouth College. “For a sports fan, this is the time to be alive. The group [for the Euros] is good. I think we’ve had similar groups in the past for Switzerland – I’m happy now we’ve got Scotland, Hungary and Germany. I’ll have to tease [Andy] Murray and he’s actually better than me at that!”
