Jamie Carragher called out Yves Bissouma after his clumsy challenge
Jamie Carragher branded Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma “absolutely braindead” after his mistimed lunging tackle conceded a penalty against Chelsea in Sunday’s entertaining Premier League clash. Spurs threw away a 2-0 lead in north London when Bissouma’s reckless sliding challenge awarded Cole Palmer a chance to equalise from 12 yards.
Jadon Sancho’s majestic solo strike launched Chelsea’s comeback after two Marc Cucurella slips helped Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski hand the hosts an early two-goal advantage.
The Blues dominated proceedings after half-time and earned the opportunity to draw level when Bissouma brought down Moises Caicedo.
He had been played through on goal before the Spurs man got nowhere near the ball with his reckless attempt at a tackle.
And Palmer calmly sent Fraser Forster the wrong way, making it 2-2 before Chelsea’s momentum earned them a crucial win in the Premier League title race.
Carragher, on Sky Sports commentary alongside Peter Drury, didn’t hold back with his criticism of Bissouma for his costly actions.
He said: “I’ve said all day that some of the things Tottenham players do is absolutely ridiculous.
“It’s a certain penalty, and it was his [Bissouma’s] mistake initially on the far side, losing the ball to Neto. And he maybe comes flying across thinking I’ve got to try and rectify this in some way.
Yves Bissouma was never winning the ball.
“He was really poor on the first challenge on Neto. That is absolutely braindead. I mean, who’d be a manager?”
It was never in doubt whether Palmer would punish Spurs from the spot, maintaining his 100 per cent penalty record in the Premier League with his 11th attempt.
Enzo Fernandez lashed Chelsea ahead with a fierce 73rd-minute hit, mentally ending the afternoon for Ange Postecoglou’s weak and wounded troops.
And Palmer wrapped up the three points with his second penalty of the game, an audacious panenka that hammered home his status as one of Europe’s finest players this term.

The 22-year-old surpassed the record holder, former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, by netting his 12th penalty in the competition without missing.
Palmer has now scored 11 goals and registered seven assists in 15 Premier League games this season, spearheading his side’s unexpected title challenge.
Chelsea are just four points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand after the postponement of Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Everton.
Enzo Maresca’s men are unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions, winning their last five, with a trip to Astana in the Europa Conference League up next.
