Wolves now eyeing £5m midfielder who’s just been relegated

Wolves are reportedly showing interest in Angers midfielder Batista Mendy.

According to L’Equipe, the 23-year-old is attracting attention, as he enters into the final year of his contract.

Mendy apparently has a £5 million valuation, but the club’s interested in him are looking to pay less than that following Angers’ relegation to the French second tier.

As well as Wolves, there is also interest from Nottingham Forest and Everton in the player.

Mendy has just finished a very difficult season for Angers, who won just four of their 38 league games in 2022/23.

The club finished rock-bottom of Ligue 1 with just 18 points, and shipped a staggering 81 goals to finish with a goal difference of -47.

But seemingly, Mendy is a player that has caught the eye in a struggling team.

The defensive midfielder made 38 appearances across all competitions. And he played as both a midfielder and a centre-back.

L’Equipe have reported previously that Angers will have difficulty keeping Mendy, who’s a player with decent market value and someone followed by a few clubs.

Wolves may fancy their chances of landing Mendy this summer.

The club have done business with Angers on a couple of occasions in the past.

In 2016 Wanderers signed Romain Saiss, who went on to become something of a cult hero at Molineux.

And then a couple of years ago, Wolves signed Rayan Ait-Nouri, initially on loan.

Question marks over whether Wolves actually need Batista Mendy

This is an interesting link from arguably France’s biggest outlet.

On the face of it, Wolves don’t really need Mendy.

The star is a sitting midfielder who is more known for his ball-winning abilities and defensive work.

Right now, Wolves already have a few players like this in the squad.

There is Mario Lemina, Joao Gomes and Boubacar Traore, who Wolves are very excited about.

Obviously Joao Moutinho has left now, and Ruben Neves is expected to follow. So maybe the focus should be more on acquiring a technician or two.
