Jadon Sancho’s future lies away from Man Utd.
With Erik ten Hag out the door and the Ruben Amorim era underway, questions about whether Jadon Sancho will get a second chance at Manchester United have emerged. However, concerns over whether he’s taking his opportunity to prove the Red Devils wrong at Chelsea have also been raised amid his recent absence.
Amorim will launch his United rebuild by attempting to improve the big-money squad he inherited on the Carrington training pitches. Next year, he will enter the transfer market.
But how does Sancho fit in? Express Sport takes a closer look at how the £73million signing is getting on at Chelsea and whether he’ll be back at Old Trafford next season.
Why did Jadon Sancho leave Man Utd?
Sancho’s problems at United since his blockbuster transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 have been well-documented.
In his first season, the 24-year-old didn’t stand a chance of settling properly during a disastrous several months, which involved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking and Ralf Rangnick’s rotten reign.
In his second season, Erik ten Hag allowed him months away due to issues with his mental and physical health.
In his third season, he repaid Ten Hag by publicly calling him a liar on social media after the Dutchman cited training performances when asked about his absence from an early-season trip to Arsenal.
Sancho refused to apologise, leading to a four-month banishment before he spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
Jadon Sancho has been absent for six games.
How is Jadon Sancho doing at Chelsea?
He returned to the first-team squad for pre-season and featured for United in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, missing a penalty when his side were on the brink of victory in the shoot-out.
But Ten Hag excluded him from his first two Premier League squads before he joined Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
Sancho made an electric start for the Blues, registering an assist in each of his first three games against Bournemouth, West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion.
Yet, underwhelming displays against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool followed, and he has been absent from Enzo Maresca’s last six squads.
Maresca has cited a minor knock and then illness for his month-long disappearance.
Is Jadon Sancho’s Chelsea move permanent?
No. Sancho joined Chelsea on a season-long loan, committing his loyalty to Stamford Bridge until the end of the campaign.
His contract includes an obligation to buy for around £25m if certain conditions are met during his stint in west London.
Will Jadon Sancho return to Man Utd?
He won’t play for the club again. It would be a considerable shock if Sancho didn’t leave United for good next summer, even if Chelsea find a way around their obligation to turn the deal permanent.
The Blues will be obliged to sign the winger if they finish among the top 14 teams in the Premier League this season.
They have never finished below 14th in the Premier League era and currently sit third in the table behind Liverpool and Manchester City.
