Flared jeans, long hair and tartan bunnets feature in newly-unearthed archive footage of the Tartan Army in high spirits as Scotland launched their World Cup campaign in Germany 50 years ago.
Some had hitch-hiked to Dortmund to attend the country’s first match of the 1974 tournament.
Many were low on money but determined to stay on the continent for as long as the national team did.
One fan said: “We came over on the ferry by car from Dover to Ostend.
“We’ll be going back that way after Scotland win the cup!”
Fast forward exactly 50 years and Scotland are again kicking off in Germany – this time against the hosts in the 2024 Euro opener.
