Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold could potentially earn over £100million if he makes a move to Real Madrid. The Liverpool right-back is currently in the middle of a bidding war between two European powerhouses.
With Alexander-Arnold’s contract winding down and only six months away from leaving on a free transfer, Real Madrid has seen an opportunity. Despite having their £20m offer rejected this month, they hope to secure a pre-contract agreement.
However, Liverpool still holds out hope that their academy graduate will decide to sign a new deal. So far, he has not indicated whether he wishes to stay or leave.
Kylian Mbappe was unveiled as a Real Madrid player this week
Real Madrid is prepared to offer a substantial financial package to entice Alexander-Arnold to Spain. They are willing to significantly increase his current weekly wage of £180,000, potentially reaching up to £400k per week.
The real windfall, however, would be the signing-on fee. When Kylian Mbappe transferred from PSG to Real Madrid last summer, he agreed to a £128m signing-on fee, payable over his five-year contract, in addition to annual wages of £12.8m.
Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to match Kylian Mbappe’s £192m package, but a move to Spain would still make him one of the world’s highest-paid players. The £20m offer rejected by Liverpool could become his signing-on fee, a substantial welcome gift from the European champions.
Jamie Carragher, who has expressed concerns about the risks of Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool, believes the player’s team encouraged Real Madrid’s January bid to “cover themselves” for a potential free transfer.
Carragher stated on social media: “The most important thing for @LFC in 2025 is winning the #PremierLeague No one’s contract or future should come in the way of that! I love Trent as a lad and a player, but his team would’ve told Real Madrid to bid and also would’ve known LFC would turn it down. It’s to try and cover themselves when he leaves for free. Again it’s something the club/fans don’t need with a huge game coming up.”
Liverpool has no intention of selling Alexander-Arnold this month, preferring to keep him for the remainder of the season, even if it means losing him for free in the summer.
With multiple honors still within reach, Alexander-Arnold’s value to the team outweighs any potential transfer fee.
