Real Madrid reportedly want Cristian Romero to strengthen their defensive ranks
Tottenham star Cristian Romero is reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid this summer. Los Blancos are eyeing defensive additions for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad after replenishing their forward line with the signings of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick.
Ancelotti led Real to the La Liga title despite suffering from a defensive injury crisis at times last season. Midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga were both forced to play in defence during periods last term.
Romero has excelled at Spurs, who will be desperate to keep the Argentine. However, ESPN Argentina report that Real will target a move for the 26-year-old if they decide to sign a more experienced centre-back.
The Spanish giants are one of several clubs linked with Lille teenager Leny Yoro. Liverpool and Manchester United are also monitoring the 18-year-old Frenchman’s situation.
Lille have confirmed that Yoro and team-mate Jonathan David will be allowed to leave this summer. However, Real could seek out more experienced options as Ancelotti targets another La Liga and Champions League double.
Romero formed an excellent partnership with Micky van de Ven last season. Ange Postecoglou said after a 3-2 defeat by Arsenal in April that he wants Spurs’ younger players to learn from the combative defender.
Postecoglou said after that game, which all but sealed Spurs’ failure to qualify for the Champions League: “He was outstanding. He’s a World Cup winner and I’ve just got to get some of what’s in him into some of the others.”
Tottenham are expected to conduct a busy summer transfer window. Postecoglou admitted that several stars could depart over the coming months, making way for significant upgrades.

Club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele, bought in 2019 for £62m, has had his contract terminated. The midfielder spent last season on loan at Galatasaray and he has not played for Spurs since December 2021.
Meanwhile, there is understood to be interest from Spurs in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. The Blues may need to sell players before the June 30 cut-off point for deals to take place in the 2023-24 season, with an eye on avoiding a profit and sustainability regulations breach.
However, Chelsea reportedly value Gallagher at around £50m, with Spurs unlikely to pay such a fee. The 24-year-old is currently part of the England squad at Euro 2024 and could start the Three Lions’ first Group C game against Serbia on Sunday.
