Chelsea could lose midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer
Tottenham reportedly believe they can secure a bargain summer transfer for Conor Gallagher before June 30. The North Londoners are rivalling Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid in a hunt for the Chelsea midfielder.
Gallagher shone for Chelsea last season but could be one of their most sellable assets given any transfer fee received for the 24-year-old would be considered pure profit. Receiving a substantial sum for the England star would help the Blues in their battle to remain with profit and sustainability regulations.
The cut-off point for clubs to include any deals in their 2023-24 records is June 30. Any move that takes place later than that date will be considered to have happened in the 2024-25 campaign.
According to the Daily Mail, Spurs therefore believe they might be able to negotiate a bargain fee for Gallagher in the coming weeks. The North Londoners are long-term admirers of the former Crystal Palace and West Brom loanee.
Gallagher is currently away with England and is widely expected to be part of the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024. If he does make Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad, he will be playing at the tournament in Germany when June 30 ticks into July 1.
It remains to be seen whether that could hinder a potential transfer before the June 30 cut-off. It is claimed that all parties would prefer for Gallagher’s future to be resolved prior to the tournament, despite that leaving just 11 days.
Spurs reportedly hope to beat Aston Villa and Spanish side Atletico Madrid to the signing of Gallagher. Villa are likely to bolster Unai Emery’s squad after their remarkable qualification for next season’s Champions League, and have been linked with an audacious move for Gallagher.
The Chelsea academy graduate has only 12 months remaining on his contract with the West Londoners, with the club keen to tie him down to renewed terms. However, talks have yet to materialise in an agreement.
Chelsea are reported to want a minimum £50million for Gallagher. They sold Mason Mount to Manchester United last summer for an initial £55m, rising to £60m.
Gallagher was a key player under Mauricio Pochettino last season, playing in all but one Premier League game. He scored seven goals and provided nine assists across all competitions, and was the captain for most of the campaign in the absence of Reece James.
