Tottenham are thinking about bidding for a player Carlo Ancelotti has called ‘truly special’

With Hugo Lloris considering an offer from Saudi Arabia, Tottenham are now considering signing a new goalkeeper.

According to NapoliCalcioLive, the north London club are now considering moving for Alex Meret, with a reported €40m (£35m) offer being lined up.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard Meret’s name in connection with Spurs, so there may be some real weight behind this report.

£35m is a lot of money for a goalkeeper, but it has to be said, Meret could well be worth it.

Described as a ‘truly special’ player by Carlo Ancelotti a few years ago, the Italian goalkeeper is finally living up to the promise he showed early in his career at Napoli.

He’s just become a Serie A champion, and at the age of 26, he could well have a decade of top-level football ahead of him.

Sadly for Spurs, it is time to move on from Hugo Lloris. The French goalkeeper has been a brilliant servant for the north London club over the years, but in recent times he’s started to drop clanger after clanger, and it’s costing Tottenham dearly.

Meret looks a whole lot more assured than Lloris these days, and one has to imagine that he’d be a great option for Spurs.

Of course, as an Italian, Meret comes from a long line of brilliant Italian goalies over the years, from Dino Zoff to Francesco Toldo to Gianluigi Buffon all the way to Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Italian game certainly breeds some of the best goalkeepers in the game, and at Tottenham, Meret may well be able to put his name among that echelon of goalkeepers.

Spurs certainly need a new goalie this summer, and Meret could be a brilliant option for the north London club.
