The scenic European island that looks like Hawaii but it's only 3 hours from the UK

Best known for its wine, the sprawling archipelago of Madeira in Portugal is well worth a visit for its distinct beachy landscapes as much as its association with the celebrated footballer.

Christina Ronaldo was born on this quaint island, with its botanic gardens, volcanic pools and jaw dropping coastline, on February 5, 1985.

And today, about 40 years later, he is worshipped like a god by the locals, with a 10 feet statue, a ‘Museum CR7’ as an ode to his prosperous career, and have even named the island’s airport after him.

Madeira, however, has just as much to offer to travel enthusiasts and beach lovers.

The city of Funchal, for example, is bustling with plenty of shopping opportunities, once you’re done wandering the cobbled streets and exploring the picturesque Fort of São Tiago.

About five kilometres from the capital is the charming fishing village of Camara de Lobos that enamoured Sir Winston Churchill.

The former prime minister famously went on to paint the Camara de Lobos bay. There is also a life size bronze statue of him sitting with an easel, gazing at the harbour.

To further soak in history and opulence, don’t miss the village of Monte, best known for its dramatic display of exotic flora and flowering jacaranda trees.

You’re sure to spot peacocks, ducks and swans lounging amidst stunning sculptures at the Monte Palace.

For hikers and thrill seekers, the lichen-covered trees of Fanal Forest is of particular interest, with its misty, rather surreal nature trails.

And while you’re at it, make sure to toast a ‘poncha’, a traditional distilled alcohol made from sugar cane juice, popular with locals and tourists alike.
