Erik ten Hag and Manchester United can solve a glaring issue in their first team by signing a Bayern Munich starter for less than £10million, according to one journalist.

Man Utd have a few positions that need bolstering this summer as Ten Hag eyes a shot at the Premier League title next season. They could do with adding a proven goalscorer to their ranks to lead their forward line, with Wout Weghorst and Anthony Martial not up to scratch.

The Red Devils have been linked with Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Goncalo Ramos of Benfica. Recent reports suggest Kane is Man Utd’s favoured option, although they will have to offer at least £100million to get Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to sanction a move.

A new midfielder is also expected to arrive at Old Trafford in the summer. Man Utd like the look of Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, although an alternative Premier League midfielder has just rocketed to the top of Ten Hag’s wish list.

Goalkeeper is another position which needs to be sorted out. David de Gea is the current number one, but Ten Hag ultimately wants to replace him. This is because the Spaniard struggles with the ball at his feet and can also be guilty of some terrible mistakes.

There have been concerns Man Utd might not be able to sign a top keeper though due to how much their new striker and midfielder will cost. This is why they have decided to give De Gea a new contract.

But Yann Sommer of Bayern could be a cheap solution to this problem. Man Utd tried to sign the keeper from Borussia Monchengladbach in the January transfer window but lost out to Bayern.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Bayern paid an initial €8m (£7m) for the shot-stopper. The deal also included an extra €1.5m (£1.3m) in potential bonuses.

Man Utd-linked player has transfer clause

With Manuel Neuer out of action due to a broken leg, Sommer has gone on to play 22 times for Bayern, keeping seven clean sheets. However, his time in Bavaria could be short-lived.

German journalist Christian Falk has revealed on Twitter that there is a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in Sommer’s contract which means he can leave Bayern this summer if Neuer returns to full fitness before next campaign, as the World Cup winner remains first choice. And Neuer is progressing well, which means Sommer will very likely be put on the transfer market.

This is where Man Utd come in. Falk writes that Ten Hag’s side ‘remain interested’ in Sommer and will swoop in for him if he is put up for sale.

When replying to comments on his tweet, the reporter details how much Man Utd will have to pay for the 34-year-old. Due to his age, Bayern are not aiming to make a profit and just want to get back the £7m they originally spent on him.

Sommer would be a good signing for Man Utd. He is someone who possesses bags of experience, having made over 330 appearances for Gladbach prior to his Bayern switch. Sommer has also won 82 caps for the Switzerland national team.

Sommer could solve Ten Hag’s keeper dilemma for next season. He is a great shot-stopper and would likely make less mistakes than De Gea.

Admittedly, his signing would not be a long-term solution for Man Utd, given his age. As such, Man Utd may decide to bring Sommer in for a season or two before going after exciting young Porto keeper Diogo Costa.

Meanwhile, Man Utd are in the frame to appoint one of the club chiefs who has been integral to Napoli’s recent rise.
