Sources: Rangers ready to hijack Celtic transfer of European league’s top scorer
Rangers are eyeing up a Celtic-linked striker and could hijack a move for the player who has a superior conversion rate to Erling Haaland this season, TEAMtalk understands.
Celtic cruised to their second successive SPL title under Ange Postecolglou this season. The Hoops led from start to finish and as such, all eyes will be on how Rangers respond in the transfer market this summer.
A move for Arsenal centre-back, Auston Trusty is understood to be taking shape. The USA international was recently crowned Birmingham City’s Player of the Year on the back of a superb loan campaign in the Championship.
Elsewhere, TEAMtalk understands Rangers are becoming a genuine threat to Celtic’s proposed move for Utrecht frontman, Anastasios Douvikas.
Better known as Tasos Douvikas, the Greece international, 23, is currently top-scoring in the Netherlands.
His mark of 18 league goals puts him one ahead of PSV Eindhoven’s Xavi Simons. Douvikas has also provided four assists for Utrecht who have enjoyed a stellar campaign and currently lay in seventh place.
What makes Douvikas all the more impressive is his incredibly high conversion rate this term.
Indeed, he’s taken just 59 shots to score his 18 goals which equates to a conversion rate of 31%. For context, Erling Haaland’s conversion rate at Man City this season is 22.6%.
The Scottish Sun reported in March that Celtic were eyeing the clinical frontman and frozen out goalkeeper, Vasilis Barkas, could hold the key.
Barkas is currently on loan at Utrecht where he’s been installed as the starting stopper. Utrecht are reportedly keen to bring Barkas on board via the permanent route and any move could help facilitate Douvikas moving the other way.
However, TEAMtalk have been told Rangers could yet scupper Celtic’s plan and launch their own move for Douvikas.
We understand Rangers are hot on the striker’s trail and would love to land a blow on their bitter rivals by bringing the striker to Ibrox.
