Ruben Amorim has been told to sell three Manchester United players
Ruben Amorim has been urged to axe Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Casemiro in a ‘ruthless’ cull of Manchester United’s elder statesmen. The Portuguese boss has been told to only focus on players who will be at Old Trafford in three-to-four-years’ time.
Amorim has been appointed to finally elevate United back among the Premier League’s best teams. Despite an unbeaten start in his first three matches, the 39-year-old faces the tough task of rebuilding the club.
Former Liverpool midfielder Neil Ruddock believes he can only do that by selling every player who is above the age of 30.
Asked how Amorim should rebuild United, Ruddock told 10bet: “I think that is obvious. If you’re Ruben Amorim and you’re looking around the dressing room for players to clear out then you’re looking at the old guys, the players that are 30-plus.
“Everyone knows that United isn’t going to be a quick fix, this is a huge task, and it’s going to take time for United to be challenging again.
“I think we’re looking at a three-to-four-year plan, so he needs to look at the players that are over the age of 30 and ask himself what kind of role will they be playing in the future of Manchester United.
“That means people like Maguire, Evans, Casemiro, those are the guys that you should be looking to move on if you’re going to move anyone out.
“Will there be a market for these types of players? I can’t imagine that there will be a long line of teams looking to beat down the Manchester United dressing room door to take them. For United to return to the club that we know they are, Amorim is going to have to be ruthless.”

United might not have too much trouble getting Maguire and Evans off the wage bill. Both of their contracts expire at the end of the season, although Manchester Evening News report that Maguire is ‘hopeful’ of being handed an extension.
Casemiro’s deal expires at the end of the 2025-26 season and United have an option to extend it by a further year. The Brazilian has featured in each of Amorim’s three matches so far.
It remains to be seen if United enter the transfer market during the January window or if Amorim wants to take the season to cast his eye over the squad he inherited from Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils boss has been linked with a reunion with Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.
