Ruben Amorim will want signings straight away.
New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has already dropped a major hint about his first potential signing, and the timing could be imminent. The 39-year-old tactician took charge at Old Trafford on Monday after Sporting received a hefty £9.25million compensation for his services.
With the January transfer window looming and United sitting uncomfortably at 13th in the Premier League table, Amorim is poised to wield the club’s financial clout to bolster the squad.
This follows Erik ten Hag’s dismissal last month following a disappointing start to the season, even after a summer spending spree of around £200m.
According to the Mail, United are monitoring Sporting winger Pedro Goncalves, a key figure in Amorim’s title-winning team last term and a recent addition to Portugal’s national squad.
The versatile 26-year-old, who also excels in central midfield, totalled an impressive tally of 49 appearances last season.
He netted 18 goals and provided 16 assists to contribute significantly to Sporting’s second Primeira Liga triumph in four years.
Sporting have reportedly slapped a £66.5m valuation on Goncalves, but Amorim’s admiration for the player was evident in his final press conference at the club.
He praised Goncalves after a comeback 4-2 victory over Braga, stating: “He can play for any team in the world and with any player because he is a great player. I could take him anywhere.
Pedro Goncalves was one of Ruben Amorim’s favourites.
“He’s very funny, which improves our relationship, but he is also very intelligent. However, he also has to focus on Sporting because we have to be champions this year, but also as a Sporting coach, I say he could play for any team in the world.”
Fans are eager to see if Amorim will bring Goncalves to Manchester United, but they’ll have to wait as Amorim confirmed no raid of his former club would happen in January.
“I won’t [sign Sporting players] in January, that’s what I said. I don’t know about the summer,” Amorim added.
He also acknowledged the quality of Sporting players and the unpredictable nature of football, especially in England, stating: “The first point is to hold on until the summer.
“Sporting players are very good players, I don’t know, we’ll see. I know the phenomenon of football especially in England, and I know how things change.”
As he prepares for his first match away at Ipswich Town next weekend, Amorim also reflected on the managerial experiences of others like Mikel Arteta and Ange Postecoglou.
He concluded: “I can talk about Arteta, Postecoglou, how things went well, how they went badly. What will dictate is how the first game goes, with a win or not. Then we’ll see.”
