Ruben Amorim has already found out that life at Manchester United is tough
Ruben Amorim, the Portuguese manager of Manchester United, has been praised for his ability to inspire his team and extract their best performances at Old Trafford. Since taking over from Erik ten Hag six games ago, Amorim has led United to three victories.
Despite Premier League losses to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, the team secured a hard-fought win against Viktoria Plzen in Europe on Thursday, with another challenging match against rivals Man City looming today. Wes Brown, a seven-time Premier League champion during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, has expressed his admiration for Amorim’s approach so far.
He believes that Amorim’s management style is key to maintaining control of the dressing room, an area where Ten Hag struggled, particularly during Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stint at the club. “It’s very important, the man-management side of things,” Brown said.
“Not every player needs man-management, but a lot of players do. I’ve experienced that with Sir Alex, who was by far the best out of the managers that I played under at man-management. You want your manager to give you confidence, and some players react in different ways.
“Some players need to be told what they did well, others need a telling off, and Amorim seems to be the sort of manager who understands how to communicate with his players, which is really good. Regardless of anything else, you want your players to be on your side and you need them to understand what you want from them.”
The former player shared his thoughts, stating: “If you’re a good man-manager, you can, when everything’s going bad, keep a lid on things to a certain extent. There isn’t as much conflict, and when things kick off, the players respond to criticism in the right way.
“I think that man-management, that communication with his players since he’s come in has been really good. It looks like he can connect with this group of players – and I also think it helps that he’s young.”
He continued by discussing United’s new formation and potential changes in the team: “The January and summer windows are just around the corner and regardless of whether you’re playing well, or how long you’ve been at the club, people come and go in football.
“Amorim will certainly be looking to bring in his own players. You don’t want to be the player that is shown the door because it doesn’t get better than playing for Manchester United.”
One player who seems to have benefited from Amorim’s management is Mason Mount.
Brown believes this is due to Amorim’s ability to inspire his team: “Amorim has given Mason a whole bunch of confidence. Regardless of what’s happened in the past, I just hope that Mason really takes this opportunity because we all know how good he can be. And knowing Mason as well, he’s someone who you can tell really tries, but maybe has been lacking a little bit of confidence, but he’s trying to get that back, Amorim is working hard to restore Mason’s top form.
“Mason still has to do the business, but for a confidence boost, I think it’s fantastic that he’s back in there and has been given an opportunity by Amorim.”
