Ruben Amorim is set to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager as early as this week following the latter’s long-anticipated sacking on Monday morning. Still, the Portuguese tactician reportedly agrees with one of his predecessor’s major decisions during his two-and-a-half-year reign at Old Trafford.

Amorim is said to have verbally agreed to become United’s new boss, with negotiations ongoing over his £8.3million release clause.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take interim charge in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round clash against Leicester City.

However, the 39-year-old could be in the hot seat for this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea amid a rapidly developing situation.

Ten Hag’s position became untenable due to a continued woeful run of results since the start of last season. United are 14th in the Premier League, having won three and lost four of their nine games this term.

The Red Devils are also slouched in 21st in the Europa League after three matches, surrendering leads to drop points against FC Twente, FC Porto and Fenerbahce.

However, history should treat Ten Hag fairly. The Dutchman lifted two major trophies in as many years – ending a six-year silverware drought – and was seldom afraid to make huge calls.

One of those involved demoting Cristiano Ronaldo to a bench player in the early months of his tenure due to a belief the veteran striker wasn’t willing to adapt to his high-pressing style.

The pair’s relationship blew up at the end of 2022 when Ronaldo publicly aimed fire at Ten Hag during a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.

Among his outlandish address, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner claimed Ten Hag was among figures at United attempting to force him out. His contract was terminated shortly after.

The Red Devils manager was criticised for his treatment of Ronaldo from some corners of the fanbase and the wider football world.

However, he would’ve had a supporter in his eventual successor.

According to The Times, Amorim strongly opposed the idea of Sporting re-signing Ronaldo after his second United exit.

It’s claimed he went as far as to threaten to quit as head coach if Sporting sanctioned a deal for the Portuguese icon, whose Old Trafford comeback had disrupted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s project a year earlier.

Ronaldo eventually signed for Al-Nassr to launch a Saudi Arabian football revolution, which saw a plethora of high-profile football stars follow in his footsteps.

Amorim will be satisfied with his stance, considering he lifted his second Liga Portugal title as Sporting boss last season. He is now ready for his next challenge.
