Report: Chelsea will have to pay at least £40m to sign midfield target highly rated by Kevin De Bruyne
Chelsea target Romeo Lavia could cost at least £40million to sign from Southampton this summer, according to reports.
Southampton will be playing Championship football next season after their relegation, so will they be able to keep hold of their best players such as Romeo Lavia?
The Daily Mail claims that 19-year-old talent Lavia is a midfielder admired by Chelsea.
In addition, they report that Southampton are expected to demand somewhere between £40million-£50million for the teenager’s sale.
The Express claimed this week that Chelsea favourite Eden Hazard previously encouraged Lavia to make the move to Stamford Bridge if the opportunity arose.
It’s going to take quite a sizable transfer free to sign the Belgium international from Southampton, but the speculation in the media is that Chelsea are definitely interested.
Despite being just 19, Lavia showed some great maturity and he was one of the stronger performers this season in a Saints squad that were relegated from the Premier League.
The former Manchester City youngster now has a full year of English top-flight football under his belt, which should put a big tick against his name.
Incidentally, Man City star Kevin De Bruyne once called Lavia “very good” and tipped him to be a top player for the future. If you’ve got De Bruyne rating you highly, you’re clearly doing a lot of things very well.
Lavia is definitely a rising star we would like to see in Chelsea colours, but we’re sceptical of the quoted price tag of around £40million.
If we can negotiate down a further £5million-£10million, we would look at this deal in a totally different way.
Regardless, Southampton’s defensive midfielder is a big talent with plenty of physical and technical attributes.
