Raphael Varane is poised for a surprising move after leaving Man Utd
Raphael Varane jetted to Como on Saturday to discuss a shock move to the Serie A new boys.
The Frenchman will be a free agent as of tomorrow (Monday) when his Manchester United contract formally expires.
Inter Miami and clubs the Middle East have shown interest but the Italian outfit are now leading the race for his signature as they look to pull off a shock transfer after sealing promotion to the top flight.
Como are already set to welcome Italy striker Andrea Belotti and Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez, who is poised to become their second high-profile signing of the summer, to the club.
And they intend to arrive in Serie A with a bang by testing the pull of former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who operates as their assistant coach.
Fabregas is technically considered the manager but he is technically Osian Roberts’ No.2. That is because he does not have the required coaching license to be officially recognised as their head coach.
Varane, 31, helped United win the FA Cup upon his return from injury but the French veteran he is poised to enjoy a new adventure after three injury-hit seasons at Old Trafford.
On leaving United, he said: “To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt.
“The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player, it was insane. The atmosphere was amazing. I fell in love with the club, with the fans.
“You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents. For my kids, it’s home here. It’s going to be a special place for me, for life.
“When the fans go to Wembley, it’s something they remember for life. To share that moment with them was absolutely amazing. Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I’m very positive for the future.
“The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy. I’ll see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye for the last game at home this season. It’s going to be a very emotional day for me, for sure.”
