Pundit slams Tottenham for leaving midfielder ‘in the wilderness;’ backs him to ‘re-boot’ career

Tony Cascarino is tipping Harry Winks to ‘re-boot his career’ after leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Leicester City on a three-year deal.

The midfielder has gradually fallen down the pecking order at Spurs, despite him playing an important role for the London club in the past.

Winks spent last season on loan with Serie A side Sampdoria, where he put in some decent performances. But, he was unable to prevent them from being relegated.

Now, he has joined Leicester for a fee of £10m. So, it will be interesting to see how he performs in the Championship next term.

This will free up funds for Ange Postecoglou to make his own additions. The manager is currently focusing on improving his defence, with Wolfsburg centre-back Micky van de Ven thought to be his main target.

Overall, since breaking into the Tottenham senior team in 2016, Winks made 203 appearances for the London club. In the process, he scored five goals and made six assists.

However, as mentioned, he struggled for consistent playing time after falling behind the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in the pecking order.

Winks is now set to embark on a new challenge with Leicester, who will be looking to instantly return to the Premier League.

Cascarino: Winks was ‘left in the wilderness at Spurs’

Now, pundit Tony Cascarino thinks Winks’ move to Leicester is the perfect opportunity for him to get his career back on track.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Cascarino said: “Yes, it’s a good move for Harry because he got left in the wilderness a bit at Spurs.

“At one time, it looked like he might have a career there. For whatever reason, or whatever manager, he just didn’t play enough football. In and out of the team.

“Then, he found himself sidelined and not involved in the team, then he found himself not involved at all last season.

“He needed that move. Needed to get away from the football club. I am sure he would love to have established him at Spurs – Harry Winks needs to re-boot his career at Leicester.”

After Winks’ departure, it will be interesting to see who Postecoglou opts to use in his midfield next season.

The likes of Hojbjerg and Skipp are expected to be regulars in the side, along with Rodrigo Bentancur.

What will be interesting, though, is whether Tanguy Ndombele gets a chance to reignite his Tottenham career. He, like Winks, spent last season out on loan, but Postecoglou is tipped to evaluate him in pre-season.
