The Premier League have released a statement after a controversial penalty was awarded in Ipswich Town’s match against Chelsea on Monday.
The Tractor Boys took the lead when Liam Delap stepped up from the spot to beat Filip Jorgensen from 12 yards. However, there was some debate as to whether the penalty should have been awarded in the first place after John Brooks’ divisive on-field call.
Delap sprinted through on goal and Jorgensen came sprinting off his line to smother the ball. The Dane missed the ball and Delap purportedly went flying over, convincing Brooks to point to the spot.
But replays appeared to show Delap losing his balance and throwing himself over Jorgensen, with no or very little contact between the pair.
Despite that, the on-field decision stood after a swift VAR review and Delap made no mistake in dispatching the penalty.
The Premier League have released a statement to clarify why the decision stood, despite Chelsea’s protests.
The statement read: “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Jorgensen on Delap was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty.”
