Bacary Sagna has hinted at the genuine possibility of Paul Pogba making an astonishing Manchester United comeback under new manager Ruben Amorim. Earlier this month, the Frenchman mutually agreed to the termination of his second spell at Juventus.

The 31-year-old scarcely featured for the Italian giants in his two seasons, where he played just 12 matches for the club across all competitons. That was in large part due to his footballing career being compromised by a four-year doping suspension handed down in September 2023 for taking a banned substance.

However, he had his ban cut short to 18 months earlier this year after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled his ingestion of the illegal substance was unintentional. Eligible for a return to training come January and free to play from March, the 31-year-old’s undiminished talent could pave the way for a third stint at Old Trafford.

It’s a scenario that Sagna, foremerly of Arsenal and Manchester City, admitted he can see unfolding to Mega Dice. “It’s a different situation today at Manchester United to when Paul was previously there,” Pogba’s ex-international team-mate said.

“United have a young coach, a coach that has been a player, a coach that understands the situation. He will probably be willing to have a player like Paul at his training sessions.

“Amorim was a player himself, so I’m sure the coach will be open to seeing him getting back home because he loves United. I have talked many times with Paul. He loves United. The only problem was the situation when he came back.

“That was a spell where things didn’t go as well as they should have done, but Paul wasn’t the only player that struggled at United during the time he was there.” In midfield against Ipswich Town on Sunday (November 24), Casemiro and Christian Eriksen got the nod, only to be subbed off in the second half as United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw.

It was a problem position for Erik ten Hag following Pogba’s departure and several signings have yet to rectify that issue. Pogba signed for United as a 16-year-old in 2009, leaving three years later in search of regular first-team football.

In his second stint at United that began in 2016 with his £90million move from Juventus, he scored 39 goals in 226 games across all competitions and won the Europa League and EFL Cup in the 2016/17 campaign. But the inconsistent nature of his performances, coupled with injury issues, led to him failing to fully live up to his then-world record transfer fee.
