Mykolenko & Pickford Share Qualifying Points

Vitalli Mykolenko’s Ukraine and Jordan Pickford’s England were forced to settle for a point as the two nations drew 1-1 on Saturday evening.

Both Everton stars started for their respected nations at the Stadion Wrocław in Poland as England came from behind to achieve a point on the road.

Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko gave the hosts the lead on 26 minutes with a first-time finish into the bottom right corner past Pickford.

Gareth Southgate’s side responded on 41 minutes when Kyle Walker was played in over the top along the right by Harry Kane, smashing the ball in at the near post to put the Three Lions level.

While England dominated in possession and chances on goal, they were unable to slot away a second as their 100-per-cent record in European Championship qualifying came to an end.

Everton’s Ukrainian produced a memorable performance. The 24-year-old completed a 90 minute display, registered two successful tackles (100-per-cent success from attempted challenges), five clearances and one interception.

It was a relatively quiet evening for England’s number one, with the host’s only opportunity on target being Zinchenko’s opening strike.

Gareth Southgate’s side will travel to Glasgow next to face Scotland on Tuesday 12 September in a special heritage match to mark the 150th anniversary of when the two sides faced back in 1872.

Meanwhile Mykolenko’s Ukraine travel to Italy for the next European qualifier on Tuesday 12 September.

Elsewhere, Amadou Onana’s Belgium maintained their spot at the top of group F with victory over Azerbaijan.

Yannick Carrasco scored the only goal of the game late into the first half as Belgium remain level with Austria on 10 points.

The Blues midfielder started from the off and competed a 90 minute performance to earn a hard fought three points for the Red Devils.

Up next for Onana’s Belgium is a match back on home soil when they welcome Estonia to Brussels on Tuesday 12 September.
