Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer.
Alan Shearer has issued a stark warning to Liverpool regarding Mohamed Salah’s contract saga, suggesting the Egyptian forward’s demands could land the club in “an impossible situation”. The former England skipper also rejected the notion of Salah simply dictating his terms amidst ongoing speculation about his future.
Salah, whose contract expires at season’s end, is eligible to negotiate with non-English clubs from January 1, potentially leaving on a free transfer next summer. Despite netting twice in Liverpool’s recent 3-2 victory over Southampton, Salah disclosed to reporters that he hasn’t received a formal contract offer since joining from Roma in 2017.
Premier League top scorer Shearer, speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, stressed that the issue isn’t straightforward, cautioning that meeting Salah’s terms could set a costly precedent at Anfield. “When I hear people say just give him what he wants, in terms of the Salah situation, you can’t just give a player what he wants,” said Shearer.
“One, you don’t know what he’s asking for, because he might put the club in an impossible situation if you give him what he wants, then someone else wants to know what he’s being paid.
“Then the next big hitter that comes in will want and demand what he’s being paid. There has to be a balance to something.
“We don’t know what goal bonus Salah is on, so it’s a very complicated situation when you’re talking about contracts for players who are in their 30s, but have been a huge part of the football club.”
Liverpool are gearing up for a European outing as they set off to face Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with a follow-up fixture against Fulham in the Premier League awaiting them on Saturday.
