Mohamed Salah has issued yet another update on his expiring Liverpool contract
Mohamed Salah remains ‘far apart’ with Liverpool regarding contract negotiations, contradicting Michael Owen’s confident prediction. Guided superbly by Arne Slot, the Reds have carved out a staggering eight-point lead atop the Premier League table.
This run of form has injected a dose of optimism into the Liverpool camp, but a cloud hangs over as Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts near their 2025 expiration dates. Despite this spectre, the Reds trounced West Ham in a dominant 5-0 away victory on Sunday.
However, club legend Owen was left red-faced post-match after the Egyptian superstar seemingly refuted his earlier predictions regarding Salah’s contract renewal.
Following his standout performance of a goal and two assists, Salah dismissed the idea that contract talks were progressing.
“No, we are far away from that [contract], and I don’t want to put anything in the media,” he insisted to Sky Sports. “The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league.
“I want to be part of that. I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There are a few other teams catching up with us, and we need to stay focused and humble and go again.”
Yet, this admission came quickly after Owen, who himself made a switch from Anfield to Real Madrid at the height of his career in 2004, revealed his belief that Salah would certainly renew his current deal.
Owen’s prediction was rebuked by Salah
“At some point it will just happen,” Owen told the Liverpool Echo regarding Salah re-signing. “But people won’t be getting regular updates from the club. These things tend to happen in private and with three big players it’s getting a lot of traction.
“He’ll keep getting asked and he’ll keep batting it off. I’ve said a few times, I’m still confident Mohamed Salah will sign. I don’t see where else he’d go. If he was that against signing, he’d have never come out and made a fuss about it. That sounds like a person who wants to get it done and is a bit agitated.”
While Salah remains mum on the matter, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson echoed Owen’s sentiments to BBC Sport, stating: “Mohamed Salah could be the biggest signing of the January window.
“You look at his fitness, the stats, the levels of performance he is hitting; players can go on a lot longer now. He plays every game when he is fit, only rotated if needed. I would be amazed if he doesn’t sign a new contract [at Liverpool].”
