Micah Richards suffered a wardrobe malfunction moments before appearing on Match of the Day at the weekend but had no time to correct the issue before the programme started. The former Manchester City defender was at the Dock10 studios at MediaCityUK in Salford to give his expert analysis on Saturday’s Premier League encounters.

Just before the cameras started rolling, Richards was told by fellow pundit Alan Shearer that he had a hole in his top.

And the 36-year-old was forced to keep still throughout the show to ensure viewers didn’t get a glimpse underneath his clothing.

“I’ve gone [into the changing room], put on my spray, ironed my gear, looking fantastic if I do say so myself,” Richards said on the Rest is Football podcast as he explained the story.

“As soon as we get to the studio I just see Alan grinning and I was just like, ‘What’s he grinning at now?’ And he says that I’ve got a hole in my top.

“Obviously I think he’s pulling my leg. I pull it up and I got a massive [hole]. I couldn’t move on Match of the Day. I was so self-conscious – it was horrible.”

Richards appears alongside his regular Match of the Day colleagues on the podcast. And Lineker replied: “Normally you do a lot of mannerisms with your arms.

“You had a big split underneath your armpit of your shirt. That’s what happens when you’ve got guns like that Micah.”

Shearer then joked: “Hulk exploded before he came on air.” And Richards added: “I was sweating the whole show.”

During his appearance on Match of the Day, Richards gave his thoughts on Manchester City’s shock 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

Pep Guardiola’s side ended Saturday five points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, with Matt O’Riley firing in a late winner for the Seagulls after Joao Pedro had cancelled out Erling Haaland’s early strike for the visitors.

And Richards said: “I think it’s (the international break) come at the right time [for City]. I think he’s (Guardiola) right to mention the injuries of [Jack] Grealish, [John] Stones, Rodri, [Ruben] Dias and [Jeremy] Doku, [Oscar] Bobb who was injured at the start of the season as well.

“I think from Al’s analysis there, the most sort of defining thing for me is they’re not pressing anymore and when they’re pressing they’re going as individuals. When you lose the best midfielder in Europe, it’s always going to have a strain on your team. But they’re just too easy to play through at this moment in time.”
