Mason Mount vs James Maddison stats compared – who should Arsenal sign?

Arsenal are on the lookout for a creative-minded midfielder this summer, and Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Leicester City star James Maddison have both been linked.

The Gunners look set to lose Granit Xhaka in the coming weeks. The Swiss international is on his way to Bayer Leverkusen, and replacing him will not be easy.

Declan Rice is our top target, but we are looking for another midfielder as well. Mount and Maddison are both set to be available, and we’ve been linked with a move to sign one of the two England stars.

Mason Mount vs James Maddison stats compared – who should Arsenal sign?

David Ornstein revealed on The Athletic recently that Arsenal want to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea this summer along with West Ham star Declan Rice.

The Blues midfielder, however, is attracting serious interest from elsewhere too, with Liverpool and Manchester United also heavily linked with a move to sign him.

As an alternative, Arsenal have lined up James Maddison of Leicester City, according to Tom Canton.

So, who should Mikel Arteta go for this summer – Mount or Maddison? Let’s see what the stats say.

Mason Mount stats

Mount has had a difficult season, individually and collectively.

Chelsea have been awful all campaign and have finished in the bottom half of the table, while injuries have been cruel to the midfielder recently, limiting him to just 16 minutes of Premier League football since the start of March.

However, Mount has still played 24 times in the league for Chelsea this season and has managed just three goals and two assists. He has averaged 1.4 shots and 1.3 key passes per 90 minutes this season. His dribbles per game stand at an underwhelming 0.6.

He has averaged 29.6 passes per game at a passing accuracy of just over 80 per cent. (WhoScored)

James Maddison stats

Maddison too has had a difficult campaign.

His Leicester City side are on the brink of relegation, but he has once again been their standout player, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in 27 games.

He has averaged 2.6 shots, 2,3 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per game – all of which are a better return than Mount at Chelsea.

Maddison averages 33.2 passes per game but his accuracy is slightly inferior to that of Mount – it stands at 79.1 per cent. (WhoScored)

The Insider’s View:

The stats above are slightly misleading because Maddison has played 738 more minutes of football than Mount in the Premier League this season, but it does give you a rough idea.

Just looking at the stats above, Maddison has had a much better season despite playing for a worse team.

The Leicester City star could be more affordable for Arsenal as well this summer if Leicester get relegated on the final day of the season this weekend.

Maddison seems like the better choice as things stand, but Mount’s ceiling is arguably higher and he’s a couple of years younger as well. We’d be happy with either player this summer!
