Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad has been linked with Liverpool
Liverpool’s failed bid to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi last summer could reportedly be revived. The Reds had shown interest in the Spanish international before the start of the season but were unsuccessful in their attempts to bring him to Anfield.
Federico Chiesa was the only new face in Liverpool’s squad in the summer, with Giorgi Mamardashvili also signed but currently on loan at Valencia.
Much of the summer speculation suggested that Liverpool were keen to sign a new midfielder, with Zubimendi being their top target.
However, Zubimendi opted to stay with his childhood club rather than move to Liverpool. Instead of seeking an alternative, Arne Slot chose to stick with his current midfield options including Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo.
The Athletic reports that Zubimendi may have changed his mind about his future after initially deciding to stay at Sociedad. The 25-year-old is now thought to be open to leaving the La Liga club, potentially next summer.
Zubimendi reportedly has a buyout clause in his contract worth £50million, and there were rumours that Sociedad wanted to offer the midfielder a new deal to remove the clause. However, Zubimendi remains on the same terms as he was in the summer, with no updates on a potential extension.

Liverpool could face a battle with Arsenal and Manchester City for the signature of Zubimendi after Pep Guardiola’s interest grew due to the long-term injury to Rodri.
Zubimendi, Rodri’s stand-in for the Spanish national team, would be viewed by many as the ideal replacement in January to help stop the Premier League champions’ dismal run of form.
