Martin Odegaard is eager to win all the available trophies with Arsenal
Martin Odegaard has set his sights on becoming an Arsenal legend by “winning everything” and etching his name into the club’s rich history.
The Norwegian, who captained Arsenal for the 100th time in their recent 1-1 draw at Fulham, is poised to lead the team once more in their upcoming Champions League match against Monaco at the Emirates Stadium.
With Arsenal currently sitting seventh in the revamped 36-team league format – where the top eight teams gain automatic entry into the knockout stages – and third in the Premier League title race, trailing Liverpool by six points with an extra game played, Odegaard is determined to achieve glory.
When quizzed about his readiness to claim a Champions League or Premier League title, the 25-year-old midfielder declared: “Obviously, if you do that, then everyone will remember you because you write history, and that is the feeling from everyone in the squad.
“We want to do something really special. We want to win everything. That’s the mindset of everyone. We want to win trophies. We want to win every time we play. We all share that mindset and we just want to win and make sure that the trophies come to the club.”
Reflecting on his journey, Odegaard shared: “Growing up, I watched the Premier League and I dreamt of playing here. Now I am the captain so that fills me with massive inspiration and inspires me to do better and improve all the time.”
Despite being out of action for two months due to an ankle injury, Odegaard made a comeback as a substitute in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss at Inter Milan last month and has since started the next five games for the Gunners.
Arsenal have been on a winning streak, securing four victories including an impressive 5-1 triumph over Sporting in Lisbon, and drawing one.
Despite falling to Bayern Munich at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League last season, Odegaard is confident that the Gunners are ready to claim their first ever Champions League title.
“That’s the feeling in the squad,” he asserted. “Everyone believes so much in what we are doing. We have confidence in everything we do as a team.
“Last year we learned a few good lessons. We wanted to go all the way (in the Champions League) and we didn’t so we had to take those lessons and make sure we got better.”
“If you look at the last game (against Sporting) it was a really tough fixture away from home and we did amazingly. That is a sign of improvement. We believe in what we do and hopefully this can be the year.”
