Erik ten Hag endured a disastrous afternoon at Old Trafford
Manchester United supporters expressed their fury as they demanded the sacking of Erik ten Hag midway through their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham.
The Red Devils’ first-half performance against Ange Postecoglou’s team was dismal, with Brennan Johnson scoring within the first three minutes from Micky van de Ven’s cross, before Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a high tackle on James Maddison.
Dejan Kulusevski then piled on the misery minutes into the second half, leading to away fans chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning” at Ten Hag. Dominic Solanke later scored the third goal in the heavy rain, with Tottenham completely dominating the game.
They achieved the highest xG – 4.67 – ever recorded by an away team in a Premier League match at Old Trafford. However, even before the match ended, some United fans had already vented their fury at Ten Hag, calling for his dismissal before the second half had even started.
One fan fumed on social media: “We’re always getting bullied on the pitch. We need a dark arts coach. We need to start playing dirty too. Ten Hag OUT!”
Another irate supporter commented: “Gets the players he wants. No game plan. Makes easy games look so difficult. Good players look trash under him. Just press talks and blacklisting players. Get Erik Ten Hag out of Manchester United.”
“Ill disciplined, running around like headless chickens,” said another fan. “They don’t know where they are meant to be or their jobs, I’m afraid it’s time to go.”
One fan questioned the ability of former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag to turn things around at Old Trafford, asking: “When do we say enough is enough! @ManUtd? Because if you still believe this man can turn things around, the question is when and how?”
Gary Neville delivered a scathing assessment of United’s first-half performance, particularly singling out Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes for criticism. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “It just sums up Manchester United in this first half, to be fair they’ve been an absolute disgrace.
“It’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen in Erik ten Hag’s time at Manchester United and that’s saying something.”
Bruno Fernandes saw red just before the end of the first-half
Regarding Fernandes, Neville commented: “When players react like that, it means something has gone on that we haven’t seen initially. He’s gone knee high Bruno Fernandes. I think he slips just before the tackle but he’s not going to get away with it.”
Neville doubled down on his stinging critique towards the end of the match, stating: “It was an absolutely disgusting performance in that first half in effort, quality, everything you would want in a football team. There will be a lot of questions to answer for that group (of players) and the manager in the next week.”
Former United winger Ashley Young also expressed his disappointment post-match, saying: “Manchester United just didn’t commit. There was no effort, no work rate, no-one was running, they didn’t have any leaders on the pitch.
“Everything seemed disjointed. It looked like there was just so many individuals all over the place. No-one wanted to take the ball, no one wanted to create anything. Everything was bad from start to finish.
“When we talked at half-time about who was the home team, Tottenham were so comfortable. They didn’t do nothing. They didn’t get in behind. Tottenham’s two centre halves weren’t troubled. It looked like Tottenham were the home time, United fans are going to go home disappointed and rightly so as well.”
Jamie Redknapp was also less than impressed by United. “It was so easy for Tottenham. They looked comfortable, calm, under no duress,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports. “Man Utd and Ten Hag are going backwards. You can’t complain any more, he’s got his back four in place, he’s got all the players at his disposal there’s no excuses.
“They are rock bottom right now. I just don’t see where they can go from here. They’re as bad as I’ve seen a United side.
“It’s embarrassing. A club of this stature shouldn’t be producing performances like that. They’ve been outworked and that’s been the most damning thing for me over the last few games.”
