Man Utd rival Chelsea for Andre Onana replacement with Erik ten Hag 'unconvinced'

Man Utd played very poorly in away defeat at Newcastle

Manchester United are surprise contenders in the running to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan amid Andre Onana’s sloppy start, according to reports. Erik ten Hag opted to replace David de Gea in the summer, but the Spaniard’s £47million successor has been far from perfect.

Onana joined from Inter Milan after De Gea didn’t accept a significant pay rise to remain at Old Trafford, ending his 11-year stay as United No 1.

But the Cameroon international has cost United with a handful of mistakes, especially in the Champions League group stage.

Ten Hag launched a staunch defence of his goalkeeper last week, citing statistics that show he’s been the “second-best” in the Premier League this season.

It’s true that the 27-year-old has shown improvement in domestic fixtures in recent weeks, helping United win five of their last seven league outings.

But his European errors have left United rock bottom of Group A with just one win in five games. Defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford would end the prospect of at least dropping into the Europa League.

And, privately, Ten Hag is reportedly running low on patience with Onana just months after his arrival.

According to Foot Mercato, United are among the clubs interested in signing Maignan from Milan.

The 28-year-old has flourished into one of the world’s best goalkeepers across his spells at Lille and the San Siro giants.

Maignan is said to be in talks over a new contract at Milan, but it has so far proven difficult to agree on terms to extend his stay beyond 2026.

And it’s claimed that he could be available for £60m, and United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain remain attentive to his situation.

The report adds that Ten Hag is a huge admirer of Maignan’s style and is unconvinced by Onana despite making him the most expensive goalkeeper in United’s history in July.

Onana has kept the joint-most clean sheets in the Premier League this season alongside Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone and Newcastle United’s Nick Pope.

But his nightmare exploits in the Champions League have left significant question marks looming over his head.

Ten Hag’s struggle to establish his desired style of play has added to frustrations, considering Onana was partly recruited for his ball-playing strengths.

A goalkeeper’s primary job is to stop the ball from going into the net, though. And for many, the ex-Barcelona, Ajax and Inter stopper hasn’t been doing it effectively enough.
