Man Utd are primed for a busy week.
Manchester United have informed Bayern Munich that they will return to the negotiation table for defensive duo Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt, according to reports. And it’s claimed that three transfers are set to progress this week as Erik ten Hag completes his final preparations ahead of Saturday’s Community Shield clash against Manchester City.
United were busy in the first half of July, recruiting Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro for a combined £88.5million while accumulating just under £50m through player sales.
But some supporters have grown restless at the lack of movement in recent weeks, with plenty of work left to do to improve Ten Hag’s squad.
United’s recruitment team aren’t sat twiddling their thumbs, though. In the background, work is ongoing to lure Mazraoui and De Ligt from Bayern as defensive cover.
The Bundesliga giants reportedly rejected an opening joint offer for both players, holding out for £55m combined to part ways.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United have told Bayern that they will be back with a second attempt to land both players.
Ten Hag’s need for another centre-back intensified after new £52m man Leny Yoro suffered a broken foot in pre-season, ruling him out for around three months.
De Ligt is thought to have been fourth on United’s centre-back shortlist after Yoro, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jean-Clair Todibo.
Man Utd want to sign Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
Mazraoui represents a significantly more straightforward deal, but the Red Devils will likely have to wait until Aaron Wan-Bissaka completes his switch to West Ham United before committing.
Romano adds that movement is expected on Wan-Bissaka’s exit and the arrivals of Mazraoui and De Ligt this week.
The update offers optimism that the trio’s futures will be resolved before the Premier League opener against Fulham on August 16.
A fourth transfer is expected to develop, if not go through this week, as Chido Obi Martin prepares to complete his highly-anticipated move.
The 16-year-old striker left Arsenal upon the expiry of his contract earlier this summer before choosing M16 as his next destination.
United’s success in the race for his signature was considered a significant coup, given there were reportedly more lucrative financial offers in Germany.
Sky Sports report Obi Martin is set to undergo his medical at Carrington this week before his United switch becomes official.
There could also be further outgoings beyond Wan-Bissaka, with Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay the most immediate subjects of interest.
Lindelof’s departure would clear the way for De Ligt, while the absence of McTominay would call for Ten Hag to address his midfield in the transfer market.
