Below-par would be a nice way to describe Manchester United’s start to the campaign. A managerial switch in November is a common indicator that things must change. That said, Ruud van Nistelrooy steadied the ship and improved United’s results across his four games in interim charge.
But the Red Devils are 13th in the Premier League – albeit just four points off third place – and 15th out of 36 Europa League teams.
So, with a third of the season already in the can and the Ruben Amorim era set to commence, Express Sport rates how United’s players have fared.

Andre Onana (16 apps) – 8
Has started to justify his £47million price tag this season after a shaky debut campaign. Rescued Erik ten Hag from further embarrassment. Leading the Premier League Golden Glove race with five clean sheets in 11 games.
Altay Bayindir (2 apps) – 6
Has already made more appearances this season (two) than throughout the whole of his first at United (one). Between the posts for the Carabao Cup maulings of Barnsley and Leicester City.
Diogo Dalot (18 apps) – 4
Has played significantly more minutes than any other United player this term, which is a problem. He’s not had a good time of things and is seen at the scene of the crime (conceded goals) far too often. Always available, though.
Noussair Mazraoui (17 apps) – 8
Signing of the summer? His initial £13m price tag seems to have been an unquestionable coup. As defensively tenancious as he is progressive on the ball. His versatility has been a much-needed bonus.
Lisandro Martinez (16 apps) – 6
Should thrive in Amorim’s three-at-the-back system but has yet to reach the heights of his first season at United before his injury woes.
Matthijs de Ligt (15 apps) – 7
Guilty of some shaky moments at the start of his United career but has been quietly going about his business very well. Another who should enjoy the new defensive set-up.

Jonny Evans (10 apps) – 7
Mr Reliable. The 36-year-old putting a foot wrong feels rarer than sightings of the league title at Old Trafford since 2013. Arguably Erik ten Hag’s most successful recruit. Seriously.
Harry Maguire (9 apps) – 6
Injury problems have hampered his minutes. Amorim will make use of him if he replicates his back-three form for England at United.
Victor Lindelof (7 apps) – 5
One of the pieces of deadwood that survived INEOS’ summer exodus. Out of contract at the end of the season.
Bruno Fernandes (17 apps) – 5
He’d be among the highest-rated if we were talking about Van Nistelrooy’s interim stint. But United’s captain let Ten Hag down earlier this season, failing to score in his 13 matches in charge. It’d be a shock if this rating was as low come May.
Casemiro (16 apps) – 7
Seemed certain to be heading for the exit in the summer after a diabolical 2023/24 campaign. Has recovered this term. Been an important part of the engine room.
Christian Eriksen (13 apps) – 7
Another 32-year-old midfielder who has enjoyed a resurrection this term. Has scored more goals in 13 games this season (four) than he did in his previous 72 for United (three).
Manuel Ugarte (11 apps) – 6
Struggled at first as he got to grips with the demands of English football. But he saved his best performance yet for Leicester City last time out and will be a regular starter under Amorim.
Kobbie Mainoo (9 apps) – 5
Frustrating maiden full season as a first-team regular. Has been absent through injury for almost two months. He’ll have a major part to play once he returns to contention.
Mason Mount (6 apps) – 3
A harsh rating, perhaps, but it’s still unclear why United splashed £55m to sign him from Chelsea and hand him the iconic No. 7 shirt. The never-ending injuries are also an unfortunate yet warranted concern. Has found joy in a 3-4-3 previously under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
Toby Collyer (3 apps) – 5
Became United’s 251st academy graduate against Manchester City. Showed great character after Ten Hag threw him to the dogs at half-time in the 3-0 humiliation by Liverpool. Then played 90 minutes in the 7-0 battering of Barnsley.
Marcus Rashford (18 apps) – 5
Has shown improvements from his torrid 23/24 campaign but needs to offer more. Looked uninspired by Ten Hag at the end. He’ll hope Amorim’s arrival can spark the same level of confidence as the Dutchman’s did. Another 30-goal season would be nice.
Alejandro Garnacho (18 apps) – 8
He’s 20 years old and will, therefore, frustrate fans with his decision-making at times. But he’s been United’s best attacker by a country mile and then some. Seven goals and four assists in 11 starts. Promising trajectory.

Joshua Zirkzee (17 apps) – 3
Hasn’t scored in the 16 games since his debut winner against Fulham. Looks so void of conviction in front of goal and his play style makes it hard to see how he fits into Amorim’s free-flowing system.
Amad (16 apps) – 6
Another player whose rating could very well be higher at the end of the season. Ten Hag enjoyed ignoring him, but Van Nistelrooy released him from his shackles. United have a hell of a player here.
Rasmus Hojlund (12 apps) – 5
Has suffered from a desperate lack of service. Still very raw, but if Amorim can have the same effect as he did on Viktor Gyokeres, the Dane’s clear potential could be unleashed.
Antony (5 apps) – 2
He has shown next to nothing since his £86m arrival two years ago. So low down the pecking order he’s at risk of falling off it. If only he was as good on the pitch as he is at posting motivational quotes on social media.
Ethan Wheatley (1 app) – 5
He’s played six senior minutes, so let’s just stay neutral.
