Man Utd have reportedly opened talks to sign Alphonso Davies
Manchester United have reportedly opened talks over an audacious move to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich on a free transfer.
In the latest display of INEOS’ ambitions in the transfer market, United chiefs have started discussions with the 23-year-old’s representatives to discuss a potential switch to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have moved quickly in an attempt to snatch the Canada international from under the noses of Real Madrid, who were previously understood to be leading the race for his signature.
Davies’ contract is due to expire in the summer of 2025 and there are not any negotiations taking place with Bayern. The Bundesliga giants have made several offers to the left-back to renew his deal, only for the Canadian star to rebuff their attempts to convince him to stay.
Madrid’s interest has forced other elite European clubs to look elsewhere, with Chelsea also recently linked with the former Vancouver Whitecaps trainee.
But now United appear to have stolen a march after submitting an ‘inquiry’ to the player’s camp, according to Sky Germany.
Man Utd chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues are working on transfers
United officials have gathered ‘extensive information’ on the player in recent weeks after scouting the player. Davies has now emerged as their top target, with Erik ten Hag keen to resolve their issues at left-back.
The Dutchman has been without Tyrell Malacia for the best part of a year after he was sidelined, while Luke Shaw’s long-running injury issues show no sign of abating.
Ten Hag has been forced to use Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez as makeshift left-backs with some underwhelming results. And it appears Ratcliffe and sporting director Dan Ashworth are looking to secure a bargain signing by snapping up Davies.
Davies has played regularly under new Bayern boss Vincent Kompany and featured in the heavy 4-1 Champions League defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday. The versatile left-back, known for his blistering pace and agile dribbling skills, has made nine appearances for the Bavarian giants in all competitions this season.
But when quizzed about his future in September, Davies was coy on whether he would stay in Germany or leave on a free transfer.
“I’m playing here for Bayern Munich now, and that’s what I’m concentrating on. I want to win every game,” he said. “That’s why I’m not thinking about it at the moment. Regardless of whether I stay or leave the club, I will always carry this club in my heart.”
