Man Utd have been urged to sign Victor Osimhen.
Manchester United must ensure they sign an established striker this summer rather than another Rasmus Hojlund, according to Dwight Yorke. And the treble winner has recommended Napoli’s Victor Osimhen as the perfect candidate ahead of Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins.
Hojlund has enjoyed a commendable debut season at United, scoring 16 goals in all competitions, including 10 in the Premier League, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final.
But the 21-year-old has shown his inexperience during lengthy spells without luck in front of goal, and he has had no support or competition in Anthony Martial’s injury absence.
A new striker is reportedly among United’s summer priorities, but the profile INEOS are looking for isn’t yet known while the club’s new hierarchy form transfer plans.
Yorke, who scored 66 goals in 152 games for the Red Devils, wants the club to hijack Chelsea’s reported interest in Osimhen.
“I think United should go for the boy at Napoli, [Victor] Osimhen. I think he is the one who stands out as the ideal No. 9 right now, or the most established one,” Yorke told Express Sport on behalf of Crypto Casino.
“I think Ollie Watkins is somebody I would [also] consider. But on top of that, I think the No. 9 position is a dying breed these days. You need a hungry No. 9, someone who wants to prove themself [while being] a little bit known.
“[The Premier League] is a tough league to come into if you haven’t played in it, [especially if you join] a team that hasn’t played that great. You need a big personality in that position because it’s a key position, right?
Roy Keane wants Ollie Watkins to seal a big move.
“Often enough, if you win the Premier League or do something remarkable, the No. 9 position is very crucial. You can’t expect a young player to come in and do that.
“We’ve seen that with Rasmus Hojlund. We’ve seen the struggle with him. So I wouldn’t go for the young type. I would go and sign someone a little bit more established. Osimhen would be my pick.”
Osimhen is expected to be on the move this summer, with Napoli set to demand his release clause worth £86million – lowered from £113m with his latest contract.
United opting to swoop for the Nigeria striker instead of Watkins, coming off the best season of his career, could risk upsetting Keane.
The Old Trafford legend – and former team-mate of Yorke – has publicly expressed his desire that Watkins seal a blockbuster transfer as a reward for his electric form.
In March, Keane told Sky Sports: “He could play for one of the top teams, couldn’t he? Villa are a top team but you’re talking about bigger clubs in Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City.
“That’s a compliment to him, not that he has to leave Villa. But he’s capable of doing it. The kid is so sharp. He has a great shape to him.
“His movement is as good as any striker in the Premier League. He’s having an amazing season.”
Watkins might not be interested in leaving Villa this summer after helping the club qualify for the Champions League with 19 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League this season.
But if he isn’t on United’s radar, he will undoubtedly feature on the shortlists of other clubs searching for an elite forward in the coming months.
