Manchester United have suffered a major blow in their potential managerial search, with Thomas Tuchel reportedly ruling himself out of the running to replace Erik ten Hag this summer.

The Dutchman’s position as Red Devils boss is currently being reviewed by the higher powers at Old Trafford following a rollercoaster of a season.

United struggled throughout the Premier League campaign but showed signs that they are capable of performing with a fully fit squad by beating rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final to ensure that they will be playing Europa League football next season.

The success is a key factor being looked at by United as they decide whether to sack Ten Hag or retain faith in the Dutchman, though the potential replacements available are also expected to be a significant consideration.

Brentford’s Thomas Frank and ex-Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino are among those to have been linked with succeeding Ten Hag this summer, though Tuchel has widely been touted as the favoured option available.

However, The Times report that the German has ruled himself out of the running to become Red Devils boss, despite meeting with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Monaco recently to discuss what he would bring to the table at the Theatre of Dreams.

Tuchel spoke at length about how he would be able to bring the very best out of Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho, whilst also improve current stalwarts in the team in the same way that he developed Antonio Rudiger.

But Tuchel left his meeting with Ratcliffe with the ‘sense’ that he would not be United’s first choice to replace Ten Hag and therefore has opted to have a break from management rather than waiting on the Red Devils’ decision.

Former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has now ‘come under consideration’ as a result, with the Italian available after he opted to leave the Seagulls at the end of last season following disagreements over the transfer policy implemented at the club going forward.

Several Italian outfits have been linked with De Zerbi previously, as well as Chelsea, and United would be landing the ultimate blow on City by appointing the ex-Sassuolo boss as he is widely cited as being Pep Guardiola’s successor at the Etihad Stadium.
