Harry Maguire is back in pre-season training with Man Utd
Harry Maguire is reportedly staying put this summer as he gears up to battle for his spot at Manchester United.
The 31-year-old England star, who was sidelined from Euro 2024 due to a muscle injury, has returned to Old Trafford for pre-season training and is raring to go.
Maguire, who has just one year remaining on his contract, is expected to start in United’s opening friendly against Norwegian side Rosenborg on Monday.
The former Leicester City player, who cost United £80million, spent the off-season recovering from the injury that kept him out of the latter part of last season, including United’s FA Cup final victory over Man City.
And according to the Daily Star, in a show of commitment, Maguire even invited a United physio to join him on his holiday in Portugal to oversee his recovery and conduct specific training sessions.
This highlights the centre-back’s resolve to regain his place in Erik ten Tag’s plans for the 2024-25 season. Just a year ago, it seemed unthinkable that Maguire, who had been stripped of the captaincy, would remain at the club.
However, the Three Lions star seems to be succeeding in his personal mission to prove to Ten Hag that he is an asset to the team.
The Dutch manager was reportedly very impressed with Maguire’s attitude and performance last year after he was recalled to the first team during a severe injury crisis in defence.
And now the Red Devils boss is content to retain him – rather than let him go for a bargain price before the transfer deadline.
Despite this, United’s quest for a top-tier defender remains undeterred. Matthijs de Ligt of Bayern Munich and Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton are still prime targets.
