Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has two major concerns in his squad
Manchester United have lost the Community Shield after Erik ten Hag’s men were beaten 7-6 to Manchester City on penalties (1-1 after 90 minutes) at Wembley on Saturday.
Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to fire the Red Devils in front with 82 minutes on the clock. But with only a minute go, Bernardo Silva played the role of super sub after his glancing header beat Andre Onana to force a shootout.
Bernardo then saw his penalty saved in the shootout and with the chance to win it, Jadon Sancho was denied from the spot. Jonny Evans skied his effort over the bar and that left it down to Manuel Akanji to win it, and the Swiss defender made no mistake to win it for City.
While Garnacho thrived, Ten Hag witnessed some concerning performances from his players ahead of the new season. Express Sport’s player ratings assesses the performances of the United players in the Community Shield.
Bernardo Silva scored late on after coming off the bench for Man City
Manchester United
Andre Onana 6/10
A quiet first half but the Cameroonian was well beaten when McAtee hit the post. Denied Bernardo in the shootout but that was his only save.
Diogo Dalot 5/10
If Ten Hag wanted to bring in Noussair Mazraoui before the game, Dalot won’t have changed his mind. The Portuguese full-back was vulnerable up against the tricky Jeremy Doku.
Harry Maguire 7/10
Did his job in leading the backline without too many issues, although he struggled to pass through the lines.
Lisandro Martinez struggled at left-back for Man Utd
Jonny Evans 5/10
The 36-year-old out of his depth at the back and surely won’t keep his place when Matthijs de Ligt arrives. Missed the decisive penalty.
Lisandro Martinez 5/10
Too casual in possession and was fortunate not be punished by McAtee after a stray pass on the edge of his own box.
Casemiro 7/10
One of his better performances in the United midfield, although he was pitted against the youngsters O’Reilly and McAtee. Scored in shootout.
Kobbie Mainoo 6/10
Quiet game by his standards, although the youngster has only recently returned to the club following Euro 2024 and his fitness levels may not be at peak level just yet.
Amad was one of the attackers to impress for Man Utd
Amad 8/10
Looking for a spark, United found one with the electric display from the 22-year-old. He wreaked havoc for the City backline and should’ve bagged one goal for himself at least. A promising display.
Mason Mount 4/10
Still yet to make his mark in a United shirt and looked a little lost in the No. 10 role behind Bruno Fernandes. Where does he fit in Ten Hag’s team? Hooked before the hour and could have no complaints.
Marcus Rashford 4/10
Amad and Fernandes were the two attackers to shine but Rashford has his moment, only to hit the post with a gilt-edged chance. A shadow of the player we’ve seen before.
Bruno Fernandes 7/10
Worked tirelessly in the unfamiliar lone striker role and was denied a fantastic goal only by the offside flag. Everything United created in the second half came through him. Scored in shootout.
Marcus Rashford missed two golden chances for Man Utd
Substitutes
Scott McTominay (on 59′) 6/10
Brought on for a trademark cameo to find the winner but his air-kick from six yards left him red-faced. Scored in the shootout.
Alejandro Garnacho (on 59′) 8/10
Picked up where Amad left off and should’ve had an assist, only for Rashford to miss. But his solo goal to win the game reflected his enormous potential. Scored in shootout.
Facundo Pellistri (on 59′) 5/10
Shown up by Garnacho and was beaten by Bernardo for the equaliser.
Toby Collyer (on 59′) 6/10
Debut for the youngster and didn’t look fazed at the back.
Jadon Sancho (on 83′) N/A
Penalty saved in shootout.
