Manchester United reserve regrets over their missed financial opportunity with Mason Greenwood after club chiefs believed he would be worth a nine-figure sum, according to reports. Greenwood is already attracting heavyweight interest through his eye-catching exploits at Marseille since departing Old Trafford in the summer.

The 23-year-old forward completed a £27million switch to Ligue 1 in July, less than a year after United mutually agreed that his career would be best served away from the club.

While it was viewed as the correct decision and boosted Ineos’ transfer kitty in the market, there are said to be frustrations about what could’ve been in M16.

According to GIVEMESPORT, United were convinced that Greenwood would develop into a £100m player after he broke onto the first-team scene under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists in 129 appearances, inheriting the No. 11 shirt before his arrest and subsequent club suspension in January 2022.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, all of which he denied. All charges were dropped in February 2023.

After a successful loan stint at Getafe last season, registering 10 goals and six assists for the La Liga outfit, Marseille fended off competition to secure his signature permanently.

Greenwood has enjoyed a joyous start to life at the Stade Velodrome, producing five goals and a further assist in his first six games. His form is thought to have intensified interest.

The report adds that Barcelona are keen to offer the Bradford-born attacker a dream move to the Nou Camp.

It’s claimed Blaugrana president Joan Laporta and head coach Hansi Flick are eyeing the opportunity to land Greenwood for a fee far below his value.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with an interest in Greenwood, and they aren’t the only ones in the Champions League.

United are said to be extremely disappointed with how the academy graduate’s career at the club panned out, believing they have lost a nine-figure fee.

A notable silver lining for the Red Devils is the sell-on clause that Ineos negotiated into Greenwood’s five-year contract at Marseille.

Club figures are believed to have included an option to increase the initial 50 per cent sell-on clause they will receive from a future sale.

So even if Greenwood leaves Marseille for a segment of the £100m price tag that his potential may promise, United are set to add to the £27m received this summer significantly.

In the meantime, Erik ten Hag must start getting more out of his current young wing duo, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad.
