Sergio Aguero lavished praise on Liverpool’s Luis Diaz as he picked out the top wing duos in the Premier League. The retired Manchester City legend, forced to hang up his boots in 2021 for health reasons, knows a thing or two about what strikers expect from their wing partners.

When pressed for his choice of the top current pairing in England’s top division, he picked out exciting City youngsters Jeremy Doku and Savinho. Aguero also expressed his respect for Diaz and Anfield teammate Mohamed Salah, who have both kicked off the season impressively under new Reds boss Arne Slot.

Fellow Argentine Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United didn’t get a look-in amidanother poor start to the season for Erik ten Hag’s side. Aguero admitted it was difficult to compare the respective Liverpool and City pairings as they are at different stages in their careers.

“Diaz and Salah have more tenure in the PL, and more time together than Savinho and Doku. That makes it harder to compare,” said Aguero, per Bolavip.com

“However, either of them are the best pair in modern times. Salah and Diaz are a scoring combination, they can assist well, and they are very in-sync with their teammates. Doku and Savinho need time, but their potential is through the roof.”

Focusing on Diaz, who helped propel Colombia to the Copa America final last summer only to fall short against Argentina, Aguero, now 36, added: “Luis Diaz had proven his calibre time and time again. In any case, I think Colombia grew because of Luis’ own experience in Europe.

“It took their whole team to another level. He’s not the only player who did [Daniel] Munoz playing for Palace is also of note. This type of background makes a national team better-rounded.”

Diaz and Munoz were both involved as Colombia defeated Argentina 2-1 in the South American World Cup qualifying this week. Argentina, who were without Lionel Messi, saw their advantage over second-placed Colombia cut to two points.

Earlier in the international break, Diaz scored Colombia’s goal as they salvaged a 1-1 draw versus Peru. With Colombia 1-0 down inside the last 10 minutes, Diaz found the net with a diving head to continue his good form having already netted three times for Liverpool this term.
