Ruben Amorim has plans for Luke Shaw.
Luke Shaw is desperate to prove his worth at Manchester United as he edges closer to returning from a nine-month injury absence, according to reports. And new Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim is said to be determined to help Shaw maintain his fitness so he can become a crucial part of his plans at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old hasn’t played for United since February, when he was forced off in a 2-1 win at Luton Town with a hamstring injury.
He angered supporters by picking up a fresh calf issue after Euro 2024. Despite not being fully fit, he accepted Gareth Southgate’s England call-up and made three appearances.
Shaw returned to training at Carrington earlier this month and has been involved during Amorim’s first sessions in recent days.
According to GIVEMESPORT, the United boss wants to give Shaw the opportunity to leave his injury woes in the rear mirror and contribute to the early stages of his reign.
It’s claimed that Amorim has assessed detailed reports into the left-back’s fitness history since arriving in Manchester last week.
And the 39-year-old has no plans to cast him aside amid suggestions a new left-back could be near the top of his transfer wishlist ahead of January.
The report adds that Amorim will take a cautious approach to Shaw’s return to action to prevent further problems from arising.
Luke Shaw is back in Man Utd training.
He is said to want an open dialogue with Shaw over his condition as he looks to build a strong bond with his players from the get-go.
The United No. 23 has experience in a three-at-the-back system, previously thriving at left-wing-back for England under Southgate.
Shaw also featured as a left-centre-back throughout Erik ten Hag’s first season at the helm due to Lisandro Martinez’s own injury woes and the Dutchman’s strict stance on passing angles from defence.
If he can overcome the problems that have consistently plagued his United career, he could prove to be a massively valuable asset for Amorim.
Left-back was a damaging problem position for Ten Hag. His first United signing, Tyrell Malacia, hasn’t been available since May 2023, missing the entirety of last season.
He is also back in training, though, and is on the brink of completing his long road to recovery from multiple knee surgeries.
Neither Malacia nor Shaw are expected to travel to Portman Road for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Ipswich Town.
However, both could return to contention before the end of the year in a welcome boost at the start of Amorim’s era.
