Dan Ashworth could round off the summer with a raft of Man Utd deals
Manchester United transfer chief Dan Ashworth could finish the summer transfer window with five more deals even after Manuel Ugarte, Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho complete their respective transfers.
Ugarte is putting the finishing touches on his move to Old Trafford, while McTominay and Sancho are seemingly bound for Serie A with Napoli and Juventus respectively. The work for United’s directors will not stop there.
Here, Express Sport takes you through five Red Devils agreements which could yet be struck before Friday’s deadline…
In: Ivan Toney, Raheem Sterling, a left-back
United signed Joshua Zirkzee this summer to compete with fellow striker Ramus Hojlund, but the murmurings around Old Trafford suggest that another forward could be brought into the fold.
Brentford marksman Toney is up for grabs and United reportedly threw their hat in the ring this week, with a battle developing between the Red Devils, Chelsea and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
Many things would need to fall into place for Toney to be turning out in red this season, but stranger things have happened.
Not many stranger things have happened than Sterling signing for United. The winger has played for two of the club’s bitter rivals, Liverpool and Manchester City, but talks have reportedly been held this week over a sensational switch for the wantaway Chelsea man.
Man Utd have joined Chelsea and Al-Ahli in the hunt for Ivan Toney
Blues boss Enzo Maresca has no room for Sterling in his first-team plans, though his move to Old Trafford may hinge on Sancho heading in the opposite direction. And with Sancho seemingly off to Juve, the Sterling deal is now shrouded in uncertainty.
A third potential deal could see United move for a left-back before the window shuts. They were offered Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell but are reportedly opting not to pursue a deal, and Ferdi Kadioglu was rumoured to be of interest before he was snapped up by Brighton. It remains to be seen whether Erik ten Hag and co. have time to pursue alternative targets.
Out: Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen
United are expected to dispense with at least two more fringe players before the window slams shut. Out-of-favour defender Lindelof reportedly has admirers at Lazio, Fiorentina, Eintracht Frankfurt and in the Saudi Pro League.
Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro will give Ten Hag more than enough cover over the course of this season, making Lindelof surplus to requirements.
Eriksen has also been squeezed out of the first-team picture. Ugarte’s imminent arrival will make competition for the two sitting midfield roles even more competitive, with Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro the two current starters. Ajax are reportedly interested in bringing Eriksen back to the Netherlands for an emotional reunion, though they are yet to put any money on the table.
