Manchester United have reportedly enquired about a free transfer move for former Manchester City star Leroy Sane. The forward could become a free agent at the end of the season if talks with Bayern Munich break down.

Sane has not started a single Bundesliga or Champions League match for the Bavarians this season. The signing of Michael Olise has pushed the 28-year-old down the pecking order. Vincent Kompany has also preferred Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman in attack behind Harry Kane.

United have been short of quality and consistency on their right wing in recent years. Antony struggled in the aftermath of his £86million switch from Ajax, Amad Diallo is yet to properly emerge as a top Premier League player, while Alejandro Garnacho’s best performances have come on the left.

According to German publication Bild, United have therefore made an enquiry about signing Sane. The Germany international could be one of the first signings of Ruben Amorim’s first summer window as head coach in 2025.

Sane made 135 appearances for neighbours City between 2016 and 2020. He scored 39 goals and provided 43 assists, in addition to winning two Premier League titles and the FA Cup.

The report claims that Sane will wait for Bayern to begin talks over a new deal before deciding his future. Arsenal are also reportedly interested.

Meanwhile, Amorim is set to take charge of United from November 11. The 39-year-old’s final game in charge of Sporting will come against his former club Braga on Sunday.

The incoming United boss has already pleased fans by overseeing Sporting’s remarkable 4-1 victory over City in the Champions League on Tuesday. Striker Viktor Gyokeres bagged a hat-trick in the huge win against United’s rivals.

The Swedish forward has previously been linked with Old Trafford but Amorim refused to be drawn on whether he would join him at United.

Asked if he wants to sign Gyokeres from Sporting, Amorim responded: “No, no no. I cannot be funny with that. In this moment it was tough for me to leave, if I am starting joking about that with your cameras I have problems. This is my city, this is my country so I will respect [that].

“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else.”
