Man Utd 'approach left-field manager' to replace Erik ten Hag as switch 'expected'

Ten Hag believes future bright for Man Utd after Liverpool draw

Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Bologna regarding head coach Thiago Motta as uncertainty about Erik ten Hag’s future continues to loom over Old Trafford. The Red Devils are said to be putting their feelers out in the managerial market, an indicator that Ten Hag isn’t sure to receive a third season.

United have dropped seven points from winning positions late on in their last three Premier League games against Brentford, Chelsea and Liverpool.

It has left Ten Hag’s side 11 points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, with their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League now hanging by a thread.

A failure to gain entry into Europe’s premier club competition has proven costly for previous managers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement.

United’s new ownership structure, preparing for their first full season at the helm by making ruthless changes off the pitch, has added another angle to the scrutiny over Ten Hag’s future.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are reportedly assessing options if they decide to make a fresh start this summer and dismiss Ten Hag just two years into the job.

According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, United have requested information about Motta amid strong links to a Bologna exit.

Motta looks set to guide Bologna to a Champions League spot this season, with five Serie A clubs almost certain to gain entry due to their coefficient.

The Rossoblu are fourth, three points ahead of Roma and leading Atalanta by eight, having conceded the second-least goals and lost the third-least games.

The report claims Motta is expected to leave Bologna this summer for a top club, as interest in his services is rising.

Juventus are claimed to be the frontrunners, with Massimiliano Allegri facing intense scrutiny like Ten Hag in Turin amid a fourth season without the Serie A title.

Some reports in Italian even suggest that Motta has already agreed to become Juve’s boss next term.

He has spent his five years as a senior manager in Italy, taking charge of Spezia and Genoa before joining Bologna in 2022.

The 41-year-old was born in Brazil and earned two caps for his homeland before switching allegiances to Italy, who he represented 30 times.

Motta operated in midfield for multiple European heavyweights, including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, before retirement in 2018.

He is now quickly establishing himself as one of the world’s most highly-rated young coaches, and appears to be on United’s radar.
