Man City: Erling Haaland set to snub Real Madrid and extend Etihad stay

Erling Haaland is likely to stay at Man City one more year than originally planned – because he loves it so much, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old signed a five-year contract when he joined from Dortmund last summer (2022).

But it is believed the plan of Haaland and his camp, including father Alf Inge Haaland, had been to stay for three years – hoovering up trophies and breaking records before moving on.

Real Madrid are considered a potential destination for the Norway international once he leaves Man City, and they are expected to push for Haaland in the summer of 2024 – when Karim Benzema will be 36.

But it is believed that City are confident of spurning Real’s advances and keeping hold of their superstar striker.

A well-placed source has revealed that he now wants to stay at the Etihad Stadium for four years – until 2026.

It is likely Haaland will be offered and will sign an improved contract in the meantime – and potentially even within the next six months.

A bumper new deal would recognise the talisman’s instant impact at Man City in a potentially treble-winning 2022-23 season.

According to FBRef, Haaland currently earns £375,000-a-week on his Citizens contract.

The former Dortmund ace has decimated Premier League records since arriving in a reported £85.5million total deal last summer (2022).

He has notched 36 goals in 35 top-flight games so far this term – breaking the Premier League record for the highest tally in a season.

Haaland has added a further 16 goals in 15 European and cup games, with Man City on the verge of winning the treble.

Pep Guardiola’s side have already wrapped up the league title.

They face Man United in the FA Cup final (3 June) a week before travelling to Istanbul to take on Inter in the Champions League final (10 June).
