Joe Gomez has gone to Euro 2024 with England.
Liverpool are set to repel any attempt from Bayern Munich to sign Joe Gomez this summer. Arne Slot has now officially taken the reins at Anfield, and one of his first big tasks this summer could be to keep the centre-back at the club amid interest from the Bundesliga side.
Bayern themselves have a change of manager after ending the 2023/24 campaign without silverware, with Vincent Kompany succeeding Thomas Tuchel.
Per the Mirror, Kompany has immediately been linked with a move for Gomez, who has just had one of his best campaigns for the Reds since joining from Charlton in 2015.
The 27-year-old made 51 club appearances, even covering at left back following an injury to Andy Robertson. And he appeared in the League Cup final win over Chelsea in February, adding to his string of major honours with the club.
His form has been rewarded by being recalled into the England fold by Gareth Southgate. Gomez has now headed to Germany as part of the Three Lions’ 26-man squad for Euro 2024, with the squad’s opening game against Serbia on Sunday.
And Anfield bosses are reportedly determined to keep him on Merseyside. Gomez signed a new five year deal in the summer of 2022, meaning Slot and co do not need to panic about potentially losing him on a free transfer anytime soon.
Vincent Kompany has taken charge at Bayern Munich.
When Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool following his eight-and-a-half-year tenure, it fuelled speculation a number of players would follow him out of the door. However, those fears for fans appear to be easing amid the apparent stance on Gomez.
Mohamed Salah is also reported to be keen to remain at the club and see out the final year of his contract. That’s despite the Egyptian forward still being linked with a huge money move to the Saudi Pro League, after his club turned down a £150million bid from Al Ittihad last September.
Furthermore, Luis Diaz has now come out and dismissed speculation that he is set to move to Barcelona. The winger opened up on his future to reporters while out in the US preparing for the Copa America with Colombia.
“I’m very happy there at Liverpool,” claimed the 27-year-old. “It’s a great team and club. I’ve always wanted to play there, so I’m very happy and relaxed.
Colombia kick off their campaign with Bolivia on Saturday, and Diaz added: “I’m not thinking about anything else. I’m thinking about the Colombia national team, which is where we are.”
