Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley both sustained injuries against Real Madrid
Liverpool can go 11 points clear by beating Manchester City on Sunday and Arne Slot faces some selection headaches for a titanic tussle at Anfield. The Reds know victory against the reigning champions would solidify them as Premier League title favourites this weekend.
Express Sport looks at how Slot could line up as Liverpool look to extend a six-match winning streak across all competitions…
Goalkeeper: Kelleher
Having saved penalties in both of Liverpool’s last two matches, as well as his last Republic of Ireland outing, Caoimhin Kelleher will keep his place between the sticks.
The keeper has again been sensational in Alisson’s absence and his midweek clean sheet against Real Madrid was his fifth in 10 games this term. He’ll need to be on top form again here to thwart Erling Haaland and co.
Defence: Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson
The first of Slot’s problems comes at right-back. Conor Bradley was brilliant against Real Madrid but came off with a knock. If there are any doubts about his availability, Trent Alexander-Arnold should get his first minutes after injury.
Dilemma two is at centre-back. Captain Virgil van Dijk of course starts but his first-choice partner Ibrahima Konate also limped off in the Champions League, meaning his starting spot is not as certain as it otherwise would be. If Slot decides not to risk his fitness, Joe Gomez will come in.
Kostas Tsimikas is out injured and the only senior deputy to Andy Robertson is Gomez. If he is required at centre-half, Robertson will keep his starting spot.
Liverpool are in fine form having won six in a row
Midfield: Gravenberch, Mac Allister
Liverpool’s tried-and-trusted midfield duo will start again versus City. Mac Allister was TNT Sports’ man of the match in midweek after his goal and also scored from the penalty spot in this same fixture last year.
Gravenberch’s ability to drive forward in possession will be particularly useful against a City midfield that has looked short of energy and legs in recent games, as will Mac Allister’s eye for a through the lines pass.
Attack: Diaz, Jones, Salah; Nunez
As well as sticking with the midfield two from the statement Real Madrid win, the exact same front four could start too despite Cody Gakpo scoring a fine header off the bench.
Luis Diaz will be asked to tease the struggling Kyle Walker from the left wing with Gakpo then an option to change the game late in the second half. Curtis Jones has been excellent in the No.10 role and will get the nod there again over Dominik Szoboszlai.
Darwin Nunez will lead the line with Diogo Jota still out injured while Mohamed Salah will hope to make amends for his midweek penalty miss against a team he has scored 11 goals and laid on six assists against in a Liverpool shirt.
Liverpool predicted XI vs Man City (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Diaz, Jones, Salah; Nunez
